French scientist claims bras make breasts sag

A new study by a French scientist claiming that bras "are not needed" is causing controversy on the web.
Professor Jean-Denis Rouillon, a sports scientist from the University of Franche-Comte in Besancon, spent 15 years studying 330 French women with varying bust sizes. He claims that from his research, wearing bra's may be doing harm to women's figures.
Proffesor Rouillon's study consisted of the scientist instructing the women to not wear a bra for a specific amount of time, spanning from a few months to several years. Throughout the trial, Rouillon took bust measurements using callipers and a slide rule.

The women who took part in the trial, were routinely asked if they had suffered back pain whilst carrying out their daily routines or felt restricted when not wearing a bra.

Rouillon said: "The first results validate the hypothesis that the bra is not needed. Medically, physiologically, anatomically, the breast does not benefit from being deprived of gravity."

He explained that though 42% of the women who took part in the study "felt discomfort" for the first three months, this then disappeared. According to Rouillon, none of the women were in actual pain and could take part in sporting activities unhampered, and continued to say that "contrary to popular belief, the breast does not fall, but tightens and lifts, and the quality of the skin improves."

Rouillon also suggested that breasts become “dependent” on lingerie support, meaning that supporting muscle is under-used, and therefore degrades more quickly.

Despite this research, Rouillon said that women should not get rid of their bras. As the study only involved a small cross section of women, over a relatively short period of time and the long-term effects of not wearing a bra are still unknown.

In opposition to this controversial study, a spokesperson at bra fitting specialists said: "Wearing a bra that fits you correctly is vital, well fitting lingerie should be the foundation to every great outfit. Your breasts are composed mainly of fat and tissue and over time they lose elasticity, wearing a bra every day can help prevent stretch marks and sagging. You shouldn’t be able to feel you are wearing a bra if you have one that fits beautifully, it will enhance your silhouette and your confidence making you feel uplifted.

"We have seen customers come in complaining of back ache, shoulder ache, a sore ribcage and chest from badly fitting bras, so it is important to ensure if you are wearing a bra it fits you correctly. There have been ladies in our stores that have dropped dress sizes just from wearing the right size and shape bras for their figures. A well fitted bra will improve your posture, your clothes will sit differently and it’s proven that you look slimmer when your bust line is where it should be."
