15th Century Bra Found In Austria

Archaeologists from the university of Innsbruck have found four lined bras in an Austrian castle that date back to the Middle Ages.


The ancient bras were found int he castle by archaeologist Beatrix Nutz in 2008 and have since undergone scientific research and carbon dating to make sure that the garments are genuine. A recent article in BBC History Magazine made the discovery public.


In addition to the bras, more than 2700 textile fragments were found amongst dirt, wood , straw and pieces of leather in the castle. A statement about the discovery, released by the University of Innsbruck, described the bras as
 ‘Four linen textiles that resemble modern-time bras with distinct cups.’



The statement also said the bras were apparently decorated with lace and other ornament to ‘ Please a suitor’.

Beatrix Nutz said of her discovery: ‘We didn’t believe it ourselves. From what we knew, there was no such thing as a bra like garments in the 15th century.
